Google Rolls Out Wear OS 4

Google Rolls Out Wear OS 4 to Original Pixel Watch Just Days After 2023 Model Launch

In a highly anticipated announcement, Google has officially rolled out the Wear OS 4 update for the original Pixel Watch, making it an exciting day for Pixel Watch enthusiasts. Just a couple of weeks ago, the tech giant unveiled the Pixel Watch 2 with Wear OS 4, leaving users eager to know when their original devices would receive the same software upgrade. Google had initially hinted that the update would come “later in the year,” and they have indeed kept their promise.

The October Pixel Watch update, identified as build TWD4.2301005.002, introduces several new features designed to enhance the user experience. Google detailed these updates in a recent community post, outlining the following key additions:

One standout feature is the Backup and Restore functionality, integrated with Google One. This feature ensures the preservation of watch faces, Tiles, data, and other settings, simplifying the process of migrating to a new watch or resetting an existing one. Additionally, Pixel phone users can seamlessly transfer their Pixel Watch to a new device without the need for a factory reset, ensuring a smooth transition with synced devices.

The update also sees the inclusion of Google Calendar as a pre-installed app, replacing the Wear OS 3 “Agenda” experience. Google Tasks integration, Tiles, and complications further enhance the user experience.

A significant focus on Personal Safety features includes Safety Check, Emergency Sharing, and Emergency Info. Users can easily set up these features within the app, and Emergency Info is accessible by holding down on the crown. The introduction of Medical ID Info allows users to keep essential medical information readily available on their wrist or share it with participating emergency services during critical situations.

Accessibility and customization receive a boost with new and improved capabilities. A faster and more reliable TalkBack experience is facilitated by a new text-to-speech engine. Enhanced customization options include bold text, improved magnification, and audio balance to adjust sound intensity between right and left audio channels.

Notifications receive a makeover with smart link recognition of phone numbers and addresses. Users can tap directly on these links to initiate calls, messages, or get directions. Embedded media previews within notifications allow users to quickly view images and GIFs without leaving the notification shade, providing more information upfront for faster action.

According to Google, the rollout of Wear OS 4 will occur over the coming weeks in phases, dependent on carrier and device. As of Tuesday afternoon, users may not see the update immediately by repeatedly tapping “Your watch is up to date.” Stay tuned for the gradual deployment of these exciting features to Pixel Watch users.
