Garmin Unveils FDA-Cleared ECG App

Garmin Unveils FDA-Cleared ECG App for Epic Pro, fenix 7 Pro, and Venue 3 in the US

In a major announcement today, Garmin has officially launched its FDA cleared ECG app for Epix Pro, Fenix 7 Pro, and Venu 3 users in the United States. This groundbreaking feature allows users to take on-demand Electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings of their heart rhythm, which are then analyzed for signs of Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) or Atrial Flutter.

Users can now log this vital data in the Garmin Connect smartphone app, enabling them to track their heart health over time. Moreover, the app facilitates the export of this data in PDF format, allowing for seamless sharing with healthcare professionals.

Initially not highlighted during the launch of the Fenix 7 Pro, Epix Pro, and Venu 3, this addition required regulatory approval before being made available. The necessary hardware for this functionality was already integrated into the devices, awaiting the green light from regulatory bodies.

To access this feature, users must ensure that they are running the latest software on their Epix Pro, Fenix 7 Pro, or Venu 3, as well as the most recent version of the Garmin Connect smartphone app.

Setting up the ECG app involves navigating to the device settings in the Garmin Connect app, selecting “Complete Setup,” and then proceeding to set up the ECG app. Users must provide their birthdate (22 years or older) and enable two-step verification for added security.

The app also offers a comprehensive tutorial, explaining heart rhythm, Atrial Fibrillation, associated symptoms, and limitations. It stresses that the app serves as a tool for detecting signs, not a substitute for a medical diagnosis.

The process of taking an ECG reading is straightforward. Users are advised to wear the watch snugly on the wrist chosen during setup. After sitting comfortably and resting their arm on a table, they must place their thumb and index finger on the metal ring or bezel. The app then acquires the signal, taking approximately 30 seconds to complete the recording.

Once completed, the app provides the results, indicating whether it detected signs of AFib, along with a reminder that it does not diagnose heart attacks. Users can also log any symptoms they may be experiencing.

The results can be viewed in detail in the Garmin Connect app, providing additional information about the reading. Importantly, users have the option to export the data as a PDF for sharing with medical professionals.

Accessing the ECG app is streamlined for Epix Pro and Fenix 7 Pro users; it is seamlessly integrated into the list of activity profiles and apps. Venu 3 users can find it in the list of available apps.

While this feature is currently available in the US, no information has been provided regarding availability in other regions. Regulatory approvals are necessary and may delay its release elsewhere.

Garmin’s introduction of the ECG app signifies a significant step forward in wearable health technology, empowering users to take a proactive approach to their heart health.

Stay tuned for more updates on this groundbreaking development.
