SAMSUNG GALAXY A54 REVIEW – THIS (A) SERIES IS GETTING BETTER

The Galaxy A54 is a part of Samsung’s latest lineup of mid-range phones, the Premium A series. While it follows a familiar design, it also comes with upgrades such as a more powerful chipset and a new main camera.

Design and Build Quality:

Samsung has opted for a consistent aesthetic this year with a flat back and individual rings for each camera. The back finish is glossy, which can attract fingerprints, and the frame is made of plastic with a satin finish. As with other phones in the A series, the Galaxy A54 is waterproof and has an IP67 rating.

On the front of the phone is a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display with a 1080p resolution and a 120hz refresh rate. Although slightly smaller than last year’s display, it has a wider aspect ratio.

Samsung has improved the brightness of the display, with a maximum of 460 nits with the manual slider, which can boost up to 980 nits in auto mode when in bright sunlight. The A54 also has Samsung’s Vision Booster feature, which adjusts tone mapping and colors based on ambient light to improve visibility.

As expected, the AMOLED display looks great, with sharp images and deep blacks. It also supports HDR 10 Plus and has excellent color accuracy, depending on the color settings you choose. The refresh rate of the A54 is standard, with a smooth 120hz when swiping and 60hz when idle to conserve energy.

Display and Sound Quality:

The Galaxy A54 comes with a pair of stereo speakers for audio, which produces good loudness and nice sound quality with clear vocals, treble, and some low-end. It also has an under-display optical fingerprint reader, which allows you to wake up and unlock the phone.

The phone has 128 or 256GB of storage onboard, which is expandable through microSD.

User Interface and Software:

The interface is Samsung’s latest One UI 5.1 running on top of Android 13, which is more customizable than previous versions and includes behind-the-scenes optimizations.

One of the most significant upgrades of the Galaxy A54 is its new Exynos 1380 chipset, which has a more powerful CPU and GPU than the Exynos 1280 in last year’s Galaxy A53.

Performance and Thermal Management:

In benchmarks, the performance is quite solid, better than last year’s model, and more similar to what we saw in the model before that, the Galaxy A52s with a Snapdragon 778G. However, thermal management could be better, especially during CPU stress tests, where stability is a bit rocky.

Battery Life and Charging:

The Galaxy A54 has a 5,000mAh battery, similar to last year’s model. However, it performs better in screen-on tests and was able to achieve an excellent overall endurance rating of 119 hours. It is rated for 25-watt charging, but the charger does not come in the box with a proper Samsung adapter. It was possible to charge the phone from 0 to 56 percent in half an hour.

Camera Specifications and Features:

Moving on to the cameras, the Samsung Galaxy A54 now features a new 50-megapixel main camera, but no longer includes a depth sensor. The rear camera setup includes the main camera, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens, and a 5-megapixel macro camera.

During the daytime, the main camera captures excellent photos with vibrant colors, accurate white balance, high contrast, and wide dynamic range. The detail is impressive and the photos are rendered with a reasonable level of sharpening.

Portrait mode shots from the main camera are good, with competent subject separation and HDR for challenging lighting. The ultra-wide lens takes decent photos with fairly consistent colors as the main camera, good contrast, and a decent level of detail.

Close-up photos from the macro camera are okay with enough detail and accurate colors. When shooting with the main camera at night, the Galaxy A54 automatically applies night mode processing to photos, even if the night mode symbol doesn’t show up on the viewfinder.

The resulting photos have well-balanced exposures, a wide dynamic range, and excellent detail level with nicely developed tonal extremes. Although the white balance is generally accurate, it can be slightly off at times. However, the ultra-wide camera’s performance in low light is average, with decent detail and dynamic range but washed-out colors.

The front-facing camera on the Galaxy A54 is a 32-megapixel sensor that produces 12-megapixel selfies due to pixel binning. The selfies are excellent with great detail, natural-looking rendering, accurate colors, and very good dynamic range.

The Samsung Galaxy A54 can record video in up to 4K at 30fps with both rear cameras. The video quality from the main camera is excellent with plenty of detail, natural rendition, great contrast, and very good dynamic range, resulting in noise-free footage. However, the ultra-wide camera’s video quality is not as good.

The level of detail is decent, but the image appears heavily processed and there is noticeable vignetting. The dynamic range and colors are acceptable, but electronic stabilization is only available in 1080P resolution.

However, in low-light situations, the main camera of the A54 can capture good detail in areas with moderate lighting. The highlights tend to be harsh and the colors appear slightly washed out.

Conclusion and Final Recommendations:

Overall Assessment and Comparison to Other Mid-Range Devices: The Samsung Galaxy A54 is a superb mid-range device with outstanding features such as the display, battery life, and camera quality, in addition to its IP-rated Ingress Protection.

Although the charging speed is not as fast as other mid-range devices, and while the chipset is an improvement over the previous model, it is not a groundbreaking upgrade. Overall, the Galaxy A54 is a highly versatile gadget that is highly recommended. Check out the latest price of the Samsung Galaxy A54 Here>>
