Google Pixel Users Rejoice as Android 14 Updates Bring Lightning-Fast Seamless Installs

Google Pixel owners are in for a treat as the latest Android 14 updates seem to have addressed a long-standing complaint – the sluggishness of seamless updates. Since the Nexus days, Google’s smartphones have supported seamless updates, but users often found the process frustratingly slow on Pixel phones. However, recent reports suggest that Google has made significant improvements in the installation speed with the latest Android 14 updates.

Traditionally, seamless updates on Pixel phones could take upwards of 30 minutes to complete. Despite the time investment, the advantage was that users could continue using their phones throughout the process, except for a single reboot. This approach contrasts with conventional updates on devices lacking the A/B method, such as Samsung phones, offering a longer period of phone usability during updates and ensuring a safer overall update method.

Pixel owners testing the Android 14 QPR2 Beta 1 update, distributed through the Android Beta Program and OTA updates, have reported a considerable increase in installation speed. Users on Reddit and tech journalists alike have shared their experiences, with some claiming installation times as short as 10 minutes. This improvement is not limited to the latest Pixel models, as even older models are reportedly benefiting from the speed boost.

Manuel Vonau at Android Police and Dylan Roussel noted the surprisingly fast update on Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 Pro, respectively. One Pixel Fold user reported the Android 14 QPR2 Beta 1 update, sized at 2.6GB, taking less than 20 minutes to download and install. The usually time-consuming “optimizing” step, which could take 20-30 minutes on its own, was completed in a mere 2.5 minutes.

The accelerated seamless update process comes as no surprise, given Google’s previous efforts to enhance its speed. Late last year, the tech giant was observed actively working on improving seamless update speeds, and the latest user reports confirm that these efforts are now coming to fruition. This development marks a significant stride forward for Pixel users, promising a more efficient and less time-consuming update experience.
