iPhone 12 SAR Issue in France

iOS 17.1 Release on October 24 to Address iPhone 12 SAR Issue in France

French Authorities Announce Fix for High SAR Values; Apple to Roll Out Update Globally

In a significant development, the French national regulator of frequencies, ANFR, has confirmed that Apple’s iOS 17.1 update, scheduled for release by October 24, will resolve the high Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) values issue on iPhone 12 devices in France. This marks the conclusion of a saga that began with the banning of iPhone 12 sales in the country due to elevated SAR levels detected by ANFR.

Apple, responding to the issue, pledged to provide a software fix, and the update gained approval from French authorities last month. ANFR now confirms the imminent release date for the fix, bringing relief to French iPhone users affected by the SAR concerns.

Notably, the SAR issue was linked to an off-body detection function in iOS, which increased transmit power when the phone was not in direct contact with the user’s body. As part of the solution, this function will be disabled in France post the iOS 17.1 update. However, concerns have been raised that this might lead to potential connectivity challenges, particularly in edge coverage areas.

In addition to the SAR fix, iOS 17.1 introduces several new features and improvements. Users can anticipate a favorites system for Apple Music, support for AirDrop over the internet, enhanced options for bank and card balances in the Wallet app, a Dynamic Island flashlight indicator, and support for the Nintendo Switch N64 Controller.

Furthermore, improvements to Photo Shuffle on the lock screen are included, but it’s worth noting that certain Action Button features, such as Camera, Flashlight, Voice Memo, Focus, and Magnifier, will be disabled when the iPhone is in the user’s pocket.

The global rollout of iOS updates typically occurs simultaneously, suggesting that users worldwide can expect to receive the iOS 17.1 update on or around October 24. Apple’s proactive measures to address the SAR concerns and provide additional features demonstrate its commitment to enhancing user experience and addressing regulatory issues promptly.
